The movie is internally consistent on this point. To the movie's credit the main henchman is never portrayed as physically skilled, we're just so used to maion henchmen being physically skilled in movies that we expect it. It spends 5 minutes establishing the main henchman as basically an accountant who's able to beat up a pudgy loud mouth who's sitting down and overpower a young girl. The movie spends 90 minutes establishing Denzel's character as a good guy who is a legitimate physical threat. I disagree with your interpretation slightly, but agree with your sentiment. And the buildup leading to the eventual showdown in a place we're all familiar with is a classic staple of older action films. I haven't seen a "walk away in slow motion from an explosion without looking back" sequence that cool since the 80's. I definitely got sort of a "classic" action movie feel throughout the whole thing. Overall, it was a solid film that you can enjoy if you like good old fashioned action movies. It starts off as sort of a revenge flick, but then turns into an all out vigilante film which, again is okay, but the tone was inconsistent throughout the film. He's supposed to be just as good, but he clearly never stood a chance. Which is okay if that's what you're going for, but they built up the villain to a level that just didn't pay off. He cuts through the bad guys like butter to include the main villain. Except by the end, we know that he was never in danger. The villain is painted to be this sociopathic dude who is supposed to be the pinnacle of danger for Washington's character. But he was, so I enjoyed the fuck out of them.Ī couple criticisms from an objective standpoint though. If he wasn't in Safe House or Man on Fire I wouldn't have seen those either. He's the only reason I even see these types of movies. If you're like me and you just like to watch Denzel Washington fucking slaughter everyone in the movie, then you'll love it. When he comes out of his self-imposed retirement to rescue a young girl, he finds himself face to face with ultra-violent Russian gangsters. Synopsis: McCall is a former black ops commando who faked his death to live a quiet life in Boston.
